A unique partnership between two exceptional musical institutions, this full-time, nine-month intensive program runs annually from September to May, welcoming a maximum of six outstanding pianists from Canada and abroad to live, learn and work in the thriving cultural hub of Montréal.

Resident pianists collaborate principally with singers from the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and the Faculté de musique de l’Université de Montréal, under the leadership of co-directors Michael McMahon and Francis Perron. Throughout their residency, they will immerse themselves in art song and operatic repertoire, developing their skills as collaborative pianists, répétiteurs and vocal coaches through a fully-rounded, practical curriculum.

Guest masters

As a core part of their residency, pianists participate in several masterclass sessions with leading international artists and experts in the field of vocal arts. During these intensive sessions, guest masters – singers, pianists, conductors and coaches – work with the resident pianists on a wide range of repertoire, styles and specializations.

Performance opportunities

Pianists take part in several public performances throughout their residency, both on- and off-campus, and with a range of singing partners. Several of these performances are presented in collaboration with some of the leading cultural institutions in Canada, including the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur and the Concours musical international de Montréal.

Financial support

Thanks to an exceptional philanthropic commitment from the Azrieli Foundation, all pianists accepted to the program receive both a full academic scholarship and a generous living stipend. In addition, upon successful completion of the program, residents receive a career development grant which can be used to underwrite projects in the vocal arts, such as further training at an internationally recognized workshop, academy or internship, performance activities, concert tours, or recording projects.
